Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,600.00 - in terms of actual wear. Marvelously bold devices stand out from the pale lemon-yellow fields which conserve much lustre. Careful study finds traces of a past gentle cleaning for this charming Charlotte coin. 3372 1844'D' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,500.00 This coin displays an outstanding strike for the Dahlonega Mint, crisply defined outer rims framing precise reliefs and lightly hairlined yet deeply lustrous fields. 'D' mintmark is especially sharp for additional visual excellence. 3373 1844'O' CH EF $400.00 Choice Extremely Fine. Bold devices are wreathed in surviving lustre on this lightly circulated New Orleans coin, well-defined 'O' mintmark is neatly centered between 'VE' and stem. 3374 1846'D/D' CH EF $2,700.00 Choice Extremely Fine with much underlying lustre especially on the obverse. The centers are a bit weakly struck. There are some hairlines below the date and between stars one and two, otherwise this example is quite acceptable for this popular and eye-arresting repunched mintmark variety. 3375 1847'C' CH AU $4,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A few hairlines are noted over very lustrous surfaces. Attractive green-gold toning with a better than average strike. Although this date is somewhat available, this particular coin is very pretty and warrants a strong bid. 3376 1848 CH AU $425.00 Choice About Uncirculated in terms of wear but the coin displays graininess commonly referred to as ''saltwater surfaces.'' The detail is wonderful with all the intricate detail of this design showing. 3377 1848'D' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $10,000.00 A rare coin in almost any grade. This important specimen is very sharply struck and detailed, with bold outlining to the legends, stars and central devices. Fields are ablaze in prooflike lustre, while the overall tone of this coin is yellow-gold and richer orange-gold. A mere 3,250 coins were struck of this date, and no more than a mere handful could rival this eye-arresting specimen...  more 3378 1848'D' CH EF $1,900.00 A second. Choice Extremely Fine. Typically struck with some of the central area and stars a bit weak. Struck from clashed dies which can be seen with the naked eye. There is some light abrasion present, as is normal for this date. 3379 1851 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $3,000.00 Glowing mint lustre is frosty and toned in rich salmon and peach tones for bold appeal. Here is a lovely spoecimen of this No Motto type. 3380 1851 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,750.00 A second. Here is a noteworthy example of the No Motto variety. Vibrant coppery gold lustre is coupled with boldly struck devices. The stars and numerals are quite strong giving this example claims to Choice. 3381 1851 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,300.00 A third. Pleasing light yellow-gold lustre covers both sides of this very high quality Philadelphia strike. 3382 1852'C' CH AU $1,400.00 Choice About Uncirculated in terms of wear but exhibiting the graininess that is commonly referred to as ''saltwater surfaces.'' Well struck but with a gash on the reverse on the 'IC' of AMERICA. 3383 1853 CH AU $625.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Very forcefully struck with abundant lustre, a coin bearing light overall hairlines. 3384 1853'D' CH AU $5,600.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Minimal friction is difficult to find on this virtually Mint State coin. Lovely amber surfaces adorn both surfaces of this rarity. Excellent lustre gives this example wonderful eye appeal. Here is a well-preserved example that is quite suitable for the type from this heavily collected mint. 3385 1853'D' AU $2,200.00 Another. About Uncirculated. A better than average strike with nice lustre defines this example. There are some hairlines in the field, most notably near star 13. Still quite decent for the grade. 3386 1854'D' CH AU $6,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated, very close to full Mint State. Broad, high rims are somewhat more sharply squared than generally seen on Dahlonega strikes of this date. Abundant pale gold lustre adds materially to this coin's delightful visual quality. 3387 1854'D' AU $2,600.00 A second. About Uncirculated and very attractive for the grade. Lovely orange-gold toning over decently struck surfaces. A premium example that will please most collectors. 3388 1857'C' AU $1,300.00 About Uncirculated and strong in that grade with respect to wear. Medium yellow gold color with some light hairlines from a long ago, past cleaning. Almost all of the 31,360 struck at the Charlotte Mint this year were melted during the Civil War, accounting for the rarity of the date even in lower, Very Fine grades. 3389 1866'S' CH EF $2,500.00 Choice Extremely Fine or better. Red-gold lustre laves fields and devices. Akers' research suggested that ''Very Fine or worse'' accounted for most surviving examples and those available to collectors seeking this San Francisco date. 3390 1868'S' AU $1,150.00 Strong About Uncirculated in strict terms of wear, light yellow gold fields show a frostiness and hairlines suggesting cleaning long ago. One of only 52,000 struck, long before collecting by mintmark gained popularity. 3391 1871 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $4,250.00 - in terms of wear. However a long ago cleaning has left some hairlines. Some lustre still remains, and with a mintage of a mere 3,230 pieces, this Reconstruction Era specimen would be a welcome addition to any collection. 3392 1879 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $160.00 This sharply struck coin offers the boldest overall lustre, a glass finds concentrated field hairlines at thecoronet point. 3393 1880, 1882 CH AU $250.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Nicely matched examples in terms of lustrous visual quality, both showing a wisp of obverse rub. 2 pieces. 3394 1881 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $240.00 Deeply toned in yellow gold with some frost remaining in the fields. 3395 1882 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,000.00 Problem-free amber surfaces adorn boldly struck devices. 3396 1882 Brilliant Uncirculated CH AU $380.00 Deep orange-gold and featuring a bit of prooflike flash. Lightly wiped in the past; 1900 Choice About Uncirculated, nearly Mint State. Just a touch of wear is noted at the high points of this lustrous salmon-gold coin; 1902 About Uncirculated. Glowing orange-gold lustre boasts coppery tones in the protected areas. 3 pieces. 3397 1884'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,000.00 - and essentially in the Choice category. Boldly reflective, deeply lustrous fields display virtually prooflike quality for wonderful visual effect. 3398 1885'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $200.00 Pleasing cartwheel lustre complements a bold strike for this bright example of a date Akers finds elusive in Mint State. 3399 1885'S' CH AU $200.00 Choice About Uncirculated; 1888 About Uncirculated. The first coin offers substantial lustre, the companion was cleaned. 2 pieces. 3400 1886'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $150.00 - or better.
