Here is a boldly struck example of this first date and distinctive sub-type, distinguished by the small-letter word DOLLARS. Lustre intensifies around the reliefs, adding to the coin's already remarkable beauty and substantial visual appeal. PCGS MS61. 3304 1854 AU $1,100.00 A third. About Uncirculated with the reverse being Choice. Greenish-gold patina gives this coin nice appeal. The obverse shows a myriad of hairlines under the toning. Bright wheat gold surfaces, gentle mint lustre in the protected areas is the norm for this solitary issue of Three Dollar Gold from the New Orleans mint. The strike is extremely sharp and the mintmark and bow are thinning out as a result of overzealous polishing by mint technicians. Scarce. 3310 1855 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $9,500.00 - and a Premium Quality specimen for the issue. Although not a rare date in general, high end Mint State survivors are much less frequently encountered in comparison to the more ubiquitous 1874 and 1878 issues. The present specimen boasts intense lemon-gold, frosty mint lustre of dazzling intensity and surfaces that are free of any marks worthy of individual mention. The obverse has a lightly polished appearance while the reverse is frosty. 3315 1856 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $3,600.00 This beautiful cameo business strike features reflective fields that offer a perfect stage for fully frosted yellow-gold central devices. All surfaces are generally free of marks, but a very close examination reveals some ever so subtle hairlines in addition to some mint-made flan depressions in the left obverse field. Frosty mint lustre glows in and around the devices of this rich orange-gold coin. Here is an issue that is surprisingly scarce until the mintage of just 20,891 pieces is taken into consideration. 3319 1857'S' AU $6,000.00 About Uncirculated. Frosty mint lustre abounds in the protected areas around the legends and in the protected areas of the devices on this very attractive specimen featuring pale orange-gold toned surfaces and light salmon overtones. Attractive underlying lustre with some lemon-gold toning above. A rare date with only 1,165 pieces struck including Proofs. 3322 1871 CH AU $2,200.00 Choice About Uncirculated, virtually Mint State. This coin's rich, orange and rose gold mint lustre makes it tempting to assign to this coin a full Mint State grade. However, a close look reveals some gentle, even friction at the high points and in the fields. At 1,300 pieces, the 1871 boasts one of the lowest business strike mintages in the whole series. Choice Extremely Fine. Distinctly copper-toned lustre is to be found in and around the legends and devices of this amber colored piece. A minor rim bruise noted at 12:00. 3325 1878 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $4,250.00 Well struck with satiny cartwheel lustre. Evenly distributed medium yellow gold is evident on either side. A lovely example of the type. NGC MS63. 3326 1878 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $3,250.00 A second glistening coin with radiant mint frost. Superbly struck central devices make this coin worthy of an inspection. 3327 1878 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,000.00 - or slightly better. A third. Sharply struck devices are accented in rich red-gold lustre. This handsome coin is perhaps only a tiny tic or two from the full Choice classification, making it particularly attractive for a quality type collection. NGC MS61. 3328 1878 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,400.00 - or finer. A fourth boasting rich red-gold lustre with some faint field marks below the reverse wreath tie. Brighter lustre halos the sharply defined outer rims. NGC MS61. 3329 1878 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,800.00 A fifth. Blazing pale orange-gold mint lustre is joined by profound copper tones in and around the legends and design motifs. 3330 1878 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $4,200.00 A sixth pleasing honey gold example of this popular denomination. Frosty mint lustre dominates the surfaces of this specimen. 3331 1878 AU $1,400.00 A seventh. About Uncirculated, or finer.
