Exceptional cameo contrast causes frosty devices to float on deep-mirror fields of exceptional visual quality, all framed by gold-toned squared rims. A couple of diagnostic die file lines can be found in the drapery above Liberty's ankle. One of 865 struck, die rust on Liberty's arm suggests the final 65 Proofs delivered in the last quarter of the year.

1873'S' Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated and on the very threshold of full Gem. Pleasing russet...
- and on the very threshold of full Gem. Pleasing russet and gold allow underlying silver to peep through at various points, notably the reverse rim. Here is a charming example of the first San Francisco date, most of which went overseas as intended, leaving remarkably few high quality Uncirculated pieces for later generations of collectors.
2909 1873'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $375.00

A second. Here is a coin that is Mint State from a technical standpoint, however the color is overly pale and there is a significant degree of surface granularity on either side. Well struck.

1874'S' Medium 'S' Mintmark. Brilliant Uncirculated with claims to a Choice classification. This handsome...
- with claims to a Choice classification. This handsome example features a full measure of vibrant mint frost on both the obverse and reverse. The visual appeal, furthermore, is significantly above the norm.
2911 1874'S' Large 'S' Mintmark. No Period After FINE. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $300.00

Here is a semi-reflective example, the obverse of which enjoys claims to the Choice category. There is, however, a small reverse stain just above the eagle's beak that has been partially removed in an improper manner.

1875 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. This splendidly frosty silver coin displays a halo of subtle...
This splendidly frosty silver coin displays a halo of subtle gold. This coin was a highlight of Rarcoa's section of Auction '79, where it was described as ''Third lowest mintage of the regular circulation strike Trade Dollars. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with absolutely full strike, including the head, eagle's wing and claw. The surfaces are nearly pristine, and with an incredible amount...  more

1876 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, easily a Gem but for a tantalizing circular obverse ''bagmark''...
- easily a Gem but for a tantalizing circular obverse ''bagmark'' caused by a smaller coin resting upon it at some point long ago. The frosty silver obverse is haloed in richest russet-gold, the reverse displays boldest cartwheel reflectivity under colorful light rose and gold of rare intensity and breath-taking beauty.
2914 1877'CC' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,750.00
1877'CC' Brilliant Uncirculated and a lovely example that is just bordering on a fully Choice classification....
- and a lovely example that is just bordering on a fully Choice classification. The variety with the '18' in the date not quite touching. Well struck design features are wonderfully complemented by an abundance of glowing satiny mint lustre. There is an ever so delicate trace of golden toning on either side. Some evidence of die clashing is most noticeable at the central reverse. This popular...  more
2915 1877'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $500.00

- and virtually a Choice example. Sharply struck and offering considerable reflectivity in the obverse field. In fact, we would not hesitate in calling this highly attractive example fully Choice were it not for some very subtle obverse field hairlines. Wisps of subtle mauve complete this specimen.
2916 1877'S' AU $180.00

About Uncirculated. The mint mark exhibits doubling at the upper and lower serif, unlisted in both Breen and Bowers-Borckardt. No period after FINE on the reverse. Noticeably polished on either side.
2917 1878'S' Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,000.00

Attractive pastel shades enhance mildly reflective surfaces. All devices, letters and stars are vividly struck.
2918 1878'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $500.00

2919 1879 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $6,000.00
1879 Gem Brilliant Proof. Here is beautiful specimen of this Proof-only issue that has spent a lifetime...
Here is beautiful specimen of this Proof-only issue that has spent a lifetime acquiring its wonderful patina of blues, golds and sea green tones. Not only have the fully reflective, chrome-like fields taken on various tones, the toning has infiltrated even the most protected areas of the central devices. A mere 1,541 Proofs and no business strikes were produced, as by 1879 Morgan Dollars...  more

Another. Very close to full Gem, bold cameo contrast on both sides adds to the coin's visual splendor. Full feather detail on the lower eagle identifies this first reverse variety. A haze of light gold is observed near the peripheries. One of 1,541 struck in this vastly desirable Proof-only year.

Glass-smooth mirror fields and needle-sharp obverse devices are laved in iridescent blue with a touch of understated peach near the boldly squared rims. The glittering reverse is largely tawny orange-gold for spectacular effect. This extraordinary coin must be among the finest examples available today of a Proof mintage of 1,097. Finding a finer specimen would be a task for even the...  more

A third. Blast white surfaces have russet and amber hues confined to the denticles. Reflective mirrored fields give a brilliant Cameo contrast to the frosty devices. This coin was assertively struck, giving a level of detail in the stars and head of Liberty that is seldom encountered on this date. An outstanding example of this proof-only issue. NGC PR63.
