Surfaces are hard and dark brown, exhibiting just a touch of subtle graininess. Well struck and exhibiting the usual die gouges, die cracks and weakly defined date. 1582 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 12-G (R-4). No Coulter VG $1,200.00 Medal Turn. 143.2 gns. Very Good. Smooth and glossy surfaces are chocolate brown in the fields and lighter brown on the devices and legends. There are some subtle planchet flakes at the centers of both sides, and there is some weakness at the rims around CAESAREA and PLURIBUS. Very Good or so in terms of detail. Medium brown surfaces are granular, with a couple of larger pits and the usual marks associated with extensive circulation. 1585 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 15-T (R-4). Rahway Mint F to VF $40.00 132.6 gns. Fine to Very Fine in terms of wear. Surfaces are uniformly very porous on both sides. 1586 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 16-J (R-6-). Rahway Mint VG / F $500.00 Very Good/Fine. Surfaces are very porous, reducing the legibility of the devices and legends in places on both sides. High points are an orange-tan in tone, while the fields are a deeper burgundy brown. A large planchet flaw is noted at the lower obverse and upper reverse. Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Hard, dark brown surfaces exhibit a touch of gloss despite uniform, light granularity. A patch of verdigris is noted at the left obverse, and there are some ancient parallel scratches at the central upper shield point. 1588 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 17-K. Late Rahway or Elizabethtown Mint F $300.00 144.4 gns. Fine. Broadly spread planchet from being overstruck on an undetermined host, the remains of which are visible at the lower reverse. Smooth, blue-brown surfaces exhibit subtle porosity and some ancient scratches at the central reverse. 1589 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 17-b. PLUKIBUS. Large Planchet VF $110.00 probably overstruck. Late Rahway or Elizabethtown Mint. 154.7 gns. Very Fine. Medium brown, uniformly very porous surfaces exhibit some light iridescence. 1590 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 18-J (R-5+). Rahway Mint G / AG $300.00 143.5 gns. Good/About Good. Dark brown, exhibiting fields that smoothly worn and intermittently porous. The reverse is weak, but clearly identifiable as the workhorse 'J' reverse. Very scarce. 1591 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 18-M. Bridle. Rahway Mint VF $75.00 140.8 gns. Very Fine, or better. Uniformly very porous, this coin exhibits deep reddish brown surfaces. 1592 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 20-N (R-4). Rahway Mint VG $90.00 146.6 gns. Very Good. Surfaces are smooth but peppered by a multitude of tiny nicks on both sides. The date is very weak, and there is a thin planchet striation at the central reverse. 1593 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 21-N (R-3). Rahway Mint F $80.00 153.5 gns. Fine, or better in terms of wear. Dark ebony brown with ruddy highlights, this coin is uniformly porous. A glass reveals ancient, toned over fine scratches in the field around the horse's head. Fully dated and overall very acceptable. 1594 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 21-O (R-5). Rahway Mint AB EF $475.00 140.8 gns. About Extremely Fine. Olive-brown with hints of ruddy-brown at the peripheries, this specimen is very sharply struck but exhibits decidedly granular surfaces. From the standpoint of sharpness, this coin is finer than the Ford coin, but the surface quality cannot compare. Here is an overall wonderful example of this very scarce Maris variety. 1595 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 21-P (R-5). Rahway Mint AB VF $260.00 125.5 gns. About Very Fine. Medium brown and lightly porous, with slight laminations on both sides. 1596 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 21-P (R-5). Rahway Mint F $340.00 160.4 gns. Fine, or better. Devices and legends are smoothly worn and light golden brown, while the fields are emerald brown and lightly porous. 1597 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 23-P. Rahway Mint AB VF $400.00 141.6 gns. About Very Fine. Smooth surfaces are dominated by chocolate brown hues, which darken to a rich hue toward the peripheries. Characteristic, triangular denticles are clearly visible on the obverse, less so on the reverse. A tiny rim bruise at 8:00 on the obverse is this coin's solitary flaw. 1598 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 23-R. Rahway Mint CH AU $3,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated, nearly Uncirculated. As with most 23-R's, parts of the surfaces are peppered with tiny planchet striae, especially at the centers, where the strike is the weakest. Surfaces are chocolate brown and very glossy and lustrous. In fact, on the envelope from New Netherlands stamped ''PARMELEE 1890'' there is a note (probably in Bareford's hand) that reads ''some...  more 1599 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 24-R. Rahway Mint F $180.00 155.7 gns. Fine, or stronger. Well struck with strongly defined devices and lettering. Surfaces are a dark blue-brown hue and are uniformly very porous. A pair of minor, ancient scrapes are noted on the reverse shield. 1600 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 27-S (R-5). Rahway Mint F $275.00 147.3 gns. Fine. Dark brown and porous, with additional roughness at the peripheries. The reverse is strong, the obverse is weak at the center due to a failing die, with a die crack joining the horse head to the rim around 9:30. 1601 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 28-L (R-3) AB F $91.00 139.3 gns. About Fine. Smoothly worn, golden brown high points are framed by deeper brown, granular fields. The date is a trifle weak but fully present. 1602 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 28-S (R-5). Rahway Mint AB VF $700.00 141.2 gns. About Very Fine. Well-detailed and very attractive overall. Surfaces are striated and exhibit some granularity, with dark brown dominating amidst light ruddy brown at the high points. Legends are close to the rim near the date and at the upper left reverse. Here is one of the nicer survivors of this very scarce Maris variety. 1603 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 30-L (R-3). Rahway Mint VF $92.00 153.6 gns. Very Fine, or so in terms of wear. The design motifs and legends are generally strongly defined, lying amid dark brown fields that are porous on both sides. A lightning strike shaped planchet flaw zigzags down the reverse, a curious anomaly that will be coveted by the Jersey Copper specialist. 1604 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 31-L. Rahway Mint F to VF $130.00 151.4 gns. Fine to Very Fine in terms of wear, with some areas exhibiting more advanced wear than others due to a wavy planchet. Generally smooth and medium brown, with some tiny nicks and a verdigris spot. 1605 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 32-T (R-3). Rahway Mint VF to EF $675.00 151.0 gns. Very Fine to Extremely Fine in terms of wear. Hard, slightly glossy dark brown surfaces are uniformly porous. Generally well centered and attractive, the legends are a bit close to the rim toward at the right on both sides. 1606 New Jersey Coppers. 1787 Maris 33-U (R-5) VG / AG $185.00 Very Good. Surfaces are rather corroded and ill-defined, especially on the obverse; 1787 Maris 45-e (R-5). Very Good/About Good. Smooth at the high points, but a bit porous in the fields. The obverse is quite strong, the reverse is a ghost-like image of its former self. Here is a wonderful pair of R-5's for the variety collector. 2 pieces. 1607 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 34-J (R-3). Late Rahway or Elizabethtown Mint AB VF $350.00 115.1 gns. About Very Fine. Apple green and dark brown patina decorates hard, lightly glossy surfaces. Clearly overstruck on Vermont copper host, reported by consignor as Ryder 24. Planchet is slightly warped, with a hit noted in the right obverse field. 1608 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 34-J (R-3). Late Rahway or Elizabethtown Mint AB VF $127.00 146.7 gns. About Very Fine. The obverse is hard and glossy in the apple green and chestnut brown fields, with some pitting towards 12:00. The reverse exhibits more advanced porosity. Overstruck on an undetermined host, causing an oblong stretching of the coin. Struck from the late, severely broken state of the obverse die. 1609 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 34-J (R-3). Late Rahway or Elizabethtown Mint F to VF $200.00 137.4 gns. Fine to Very Fine. Dark brown and generally attractive, this coin exhibits very fine graininess on both sides. Planchet a bit warped, lamination noted at the lower reverse. Clearly overstruck on a Connecticut host.
